A little early Christmas celebration

ROAR!

Peek-a-boo, I see you.

Future soccer star.

Me and my favorite niece.

Lily loves lemonade

What is this delicious substance?
Grannie Jannie, give me that juice!

Yay for lemonade!

Thanks for the keys!

Irie loved her christmas present from Carl, Kathleen, Lily and Terra. The puppy-strength chew toy was no match for Irie's amazing chewing ability, but she loves them all the same. They're in multiple pieces now, but she's still playing/chewing on them constantly.
Other randomly funny things that Irie's doing these days....
  • When out on a walk, if Irie sees a squirrel, another dog, or a particularly entertaining person that she can't get too she'll let out a funny little bark/yowl. She'll then run to the nearest try and jump up on it continuing the yowl. And then (the best part) she'll bite the bark of the tree. I have no real clue why she does this. I assume going to the tree is because squirrels run up the trees so she's just associating everything exciting as going up the tree??? But the biting? I just don't understand. It's pretty funny - though admittedly a little embarrassing when other people see it and just look at you like you and your dog are crazy.
  • Irie definitely does not like getting her paws wet. If there's a puddle on the sidewalk she'll jump from one side to the other (no matter how big it is.) This is particularly funny at the dog park, because there's a drain in the middle of the park and there's almost always a puddle around it. While Irie's busy chasing other dogs around the park, she'll run right through the middle and jump the drain and any water surrounding it. Because she's so fast it really has the effect of looking like she's flying. The other people at the dog park think it's pretty hysterical.

Freezing!

Why did I agree to play Broomball this winter? Oh yeah, that's right, because I thought it was played on INDOOR ice-rinks. I cannot believe that I'm going to go brave the cold tonight to play a hockey-like game on an outdoor rink. We are going to freeze to death!

Just hope I don't break anything. Then again it's cold enough outside that if I do I probably won't feel it.

Ahh, winter in Chicago.

Other news.... Irie graduated from obedience class last night. She had the best tricks in the class. Granted, that's not saying much - her competition was not very tough. She was the star though.

Now we're moving on to agility!

Winter Wonderland

Chicago got socked with our first major winter storm late last week. It immediately followed several days in the 60s. Go figure. Anyway, Thursday night we got lots of freezing rain and several inches of snow.

Irie was very impressed by the snow on Friday. We stepped outside and she stopped, sat down and gave me a look as if to say, "What the heck is this all about???" I coaxed her out to the sidewalk and she immediately decided snow is fun. Biting it, rolling in it, jumping into the banks - all were given the big thumbs up by Irie.

However with the sunny cold weather this weekend we now have a great layer of ice covering pretty much everything. It's made our walks pretty treacherous. And even better - it's taught Irie a new trick. She's now learned the art of walking on only three legs. When her feet start to get cold she'll lift one leg and hop along for a minute until that paw warms up and then she'll put that one down and lift a different one, until she's worked her way around to all of her legs.

That's about the only entertainment our COLD weather is proving right now. I'm ready for the spring already. Meanwhile, I'm on the lookout for dog park alternatives for Irie. And because Chicago is just awesome, I'm actually finding some good ones. There's actually an indoor dog park in the city. Who knew??? I still have to figure out the hours and stuff, but apparently it's just a big storefront which the owners have made into basically an oversized living room, with plenty of space for the pooches to run around, meet other doggy friends and play. And meanwhile, I've discovered that in a pinch, the basement of my apartment building works fairly well as a dog park as well. Maybe not the most ideal and taking Irie down there pretty much guarantees the need for a bath wipe-down when we come back inside - but at least it's fairly warm and dry and allows us some room to play catch in!
